The council approved four new WID courses and successfully reviewed 5 courses in the College of Business and Technology (fall) and 17 courses in the College of Arts and Sciences (spring). The council also continued to monitor over-enrollment and began monitoring under-enrollment. A roundtable discussion of AI was held in the spring. Activities A. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all new WID courses. During the AY 2024-2025, the following courses requested and received WID designation: IS 325: Global Social Networks POLS 380: Writing in Political Science SPA 333: Autism Spectrum Disorder and Sensory Regulation CS 320: Ethical, Social and Legal Issues in the Digital World B. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all significant changes in the WID requirements for individual majors. No significant changes were submitted. C. To conduct periodic reviews of all WID courses to assure compliance with the principles and practices of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines graduation requirement. The Council continued reviewing existing WID courses. During AY 2024-2025 (fall), the following courses from the College of Business and Technology (COBT) were successfully reviewed: AGRI340, CS491/492, CSTM/ET493, BCOM320 During the AY 2024-2025 (spring) the following courses from the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) were successfully reviewed: LAS495, PHYS/BIO482, PHYS490, 3 sections of PSY323, SOC323, BIOL340, CHEM455, ENG381, FR326, SPAN326, GEOG405, MATH391, NURS408, HIST492, ZOOL430 The Council would like to note that an issue consistently recurring across many WID syllabi is the failure to note ENG180 as a prerequisite. Though some might argue that ENG280 (which frequently was listed) presupposes ENG180, the Council feels this could also be construed as an example of a hidden prerequisite. D. To maintain a list of all current instructors of WID courses. The WID Council continued to maintain a list of current WID instructors. E. To monitor course enrollment in WID courses. Building upon discussions begun in AY2023-2024, the Council noted courses that were both over-enrolled and under-enrolled. In the Fall 2024 semester, there were no courses that were overenrolled. However, using the admittedly arbitrary criterion of 5 or fewer students, there were 15 sections of 10 under-enrolled courses. In the Spring 2025 semester, there were 5 courses that were overenrolled. There were 13 sections of 9 courses that were under-enrolled. F. To secure periodic feedback from students, faculty, alumni, and employers concerning implementation and effects of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines graduation requirement. There was some discussion in the fall regarding the content of a faculty survey. It was noted that a previous survey was largely concentrated on soliciting information regarding existing WID courses, a function that more properly falls under Item C as listed above. In the spring, the Council decided to postpone conducting a survey until the following year (AY2025-2026), given that some departments were still adjusting to changes at the University level. G. To sponsor one or more faculty development activities each year to improve Writing Instruction in the Disciplines courses. The Council conducted a roundtable discussion concerning the use of AI in the WID class during the Spring 2025 semester. The discussion was attended by three members of the Council but only one other faculty member. Though all four attendees enjoyed their discussion, and many personal anecdotes were shared, no definitive consensus was reached regarding AI in the WID class. H. To perform such other duties as designated by the Faculty Senate. No duties were assigned specifically from Faculty Senate during AY 2024-2025. Respectfully Submitted.
